Kit and Bob Moorefield first became involved
with the Mary Immaculate Hospital Auxiliary in 1997. The couple
had just moved to Newport News from Northern Virginia, and
Kit began volunteering at St. Francis Nursing Center. Through
her volunteer work, she became involved with the Auxiliary.
“I enjoy spending time with the residents and getting
to know them. Many of the residents do not have families,”
she said. “You get your reward – they love you
just because you are there with them.” She and her husband,
Bob, wanted to give something to the nursing center for residents
and their families to enjoy, so they decided to fund construction
of a gazebo there.
Since then, the Moorefields’ stewardship has grown.
Recently, following a review of their assets, they realized
that they could help expand one of the most vital and basic
services in the community – the hospital’s nursery.
“We think of Mary Immaculate as a family. We want to
help grow this service to provide better care for families
in the region and to position the hospital for success in
the future,” said Mrs. Moorefield. .”For many
people, their first experience with a hospital is having a
baby. If they have a good experience, they will continue to
come back,” She said.
The Moorefield’s gift will create an advanced nursery
at Mary Immaculate with new equipment, training for nurses
in neonatal intensive care, and a partnership with board-certified
neonatal specialists.
