Province Place of DePaul has become the first assisted
living residence in the nation to have a Project Light Learning
Center within its community. Project Light is a non-profit
organization committed to teaching people of all ages to
read using computers, software and supportive relationships
ministering to those in need. Bon Secours saw this program
as a natural fit to its commitment of ministering to the
needs of the community.
"In the communities in which we live
and work, we can all mentor those in need, especially when
it comes to something as basic as reading," said Kathy
Rock, Activities Coordinator for Province Place of DePaul.
"Project Light is a natural fit for us because our
residents have the joy of making a difference in another
person's life without leaving the building, and they benefit
from the frequent interaction with local young people."
Province Place of DePaul residents tutor and mentor individuals
participating in the Project Light program twice a week
in its free, on-site Literacy Center. It is a win-win for
everyone - program participants benefit from a loving, mature
tutor and residents enjoy giving back to the community.
As one of Province Place's residents said it best, "I
can think of nothing more satisfying than knowing that I
helped someone learn to read."
