Sometimes people forget that the people working in a community
hospital are from the university hospitals. We didn’t
stop thinking when we left. As a result, I think the care
at community is as good, if not better.
Cancer is not as frightening as it used to be. It is still
a word you have to pay attention to, but the fear factor
is not as high.
Mr. Ferguson reminds me of our first conversation every
time we meet. No doctor knows how long anyone has to live.
The whole business of caring for the patient is a family
affair. People do better when their family is with them.
Mrs. Jones is a perfect example of this. Her husband has
not missed a single clinical treatment. He’s a good
coach and has helped her tremendously. I try to take time
to get to know my patients and their families, to explain
things and to educate them. Information is key.
Maryview does a very good job going into the community
to educate people about the importance of screening and
prevention. They’re doing a very good job reaching
out to the community and bringing them in and giving them
the care they need.
