Paul J. Kovalcik, M.D., a colorectal surgeon, has been affiliated
with Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center for more than 15
years. After he completed his service in the U.S. Navy, his
friend, Sister Rita Thomas, encouraged him to consider Bon
Secours Maryview. He had been in practice at Portsmouth Naval
Hospital, so he and his family had gotten to know the area
well. Years later, Bon Secours Maryview has taken on special
meaning for his whole family. Two grandchildren were born
at the hospital, and his son is now employed there. His wife
is active on the Gala Committee and has chaired the Holiday
Light Tree campaign. As a physician, Dr. Kovalcik appreciates
how Bon Secours Maryview differs from other hospitals. “I
think it is the personal touch that makes Maryview different
from other hospitals,” said Dr. Kovalcik. “It’s
the size that allows for the personal touch – we don’t
have layers of fellows and residents in the way, but we still
have all the expertise and technology of a larger hospital.
Patients here know who their doctor is.”
Speaking from his own experience, the personal “Maryview
experience” extends outside the hospital, he says, and
into his office. “We have a warm, caring staff. The
first contact patients have is with the office staff. They
get to know the patients as well as I do. The emotional, psychosocial
aspects of cancer care are well addressed here. At Bon Secours
Maryview Medical Center, we combine the technical expertise
and emotional touch that patients really appreciate.”
