A hospital derives its spirit from individuals,
such Rita Costello and Frances Shine, who have a long tradition
of being involved with Bon Secours Maryview. Both women, along
with their late husbands, have been instrumental in the hospital’s
growth.
Mrs. Shine was a charter member of Bon Secours Maryview’s
handcraft group in 1979. The group makes caps for babies born
at the hospital and stuffed toys for children admitted. They
also make dresses and blankets for stillborn babies or newborns
who pass away. Mrs. Shine’s late husband, John, was
the hospital’s first board chairman, and she is a planned-giving
donor to the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation. “My husband
was a board member for more than 25 years and I want to do
everything I can to help the hospital. We’ve done many
things that are worthwhile and I want to help inspire others
to continue the work.”
Through the Auxiliary, both Mrs. Shine and Mrs. Costello
have helped raise funds through bazaars and annual holiday
trees. Both have donated to the hospital to help it meet future
needs. They participated in Bon Secours Maryview’s “Building
Healthier Communities” capital campaign to support cardiac
diagnostic services and programs and develop the Bon Secours
Surgical Weight Loss Center.
Mrs. Costello, whose late husband, Bernie, helped secure
the first ambulance in Portsmouth more than 60 years ago,
expressed her commitment in this way: “You can’t
take it with you, so I want to give where a difference is
being made. I’ve seen the hospital grow from the beginning
and I want to help it continue to grow for the treatment of
individuals in our area.”
