On the eve of World War II, a group of Norfolk
physicians’ wives united to establish the DePaul Auxiliary
at the hospital’s former location on Church Street in
Norfolk. When war broke out, they supported the effort by
making pajamas for soldiers. They sewed for patients, too,
and cooked and cleaned at the hospital. As their membership
grew, reaching nearly 500 members at one time, so did the
Auxiliary’s commitment. From hand-made baby blankets
to donations of new wheelchairs, the Auxiliary has helped
the hospital to better serve the community. In 1972, Auxilians
Patty Sellers and Eleanor Capin opened a gift shop in the
hospital to fund a state-of-the-art nursery and support student-nursing
loans. The group’s annual Lovelight Tree has also been
a successful fundraiser, benefiting the renovation of Bon
Secours DePaul’s Chapel. Since its inception, the Auxiliary
has raised more than $100,000.
