PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR
PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS
Physical therapy can be an extremely effective noninvasive,
conservative option in the management and treatment of adult
urinary and fecal incontinence. Specially trained physical
therapists are able to evaluate and treat pelvic floor muscle
dysfunction and retrain fecal evacuation.
Primary candidates for this type of therapy include postpartum
women, post-surgical colorectal or sphincter repair patients,
coccyx fracture patients, irritable bowel syndrome patients,
and post anismus patients.
Neuromuscular re-education typically includes:
- External and internal evaluation of the sacral and pelvic
floor musculatur
- Surface electromyography (biofeedback) evaluation of the
pelvic floor muscles
- Food diary and diet modifications/education; fluid intake
- Pelvic floor muscle re-education/strengthening/training
using biofeedback
- Detailed home exercise program with on-going patient
education
- Instruction in proper posture for fecal elimination
- Instruction /training in proper voiding techniques
- Coordination training of the pelvic floor muscles during
lifting and exertion
- Electrical stimulation for pelvic floor re-education
and strengthening
- Abdominal stabilization exercises for pelvic girdle support
Patients are typically seen once/week over a course of 8-12
weeks. Physical therapy is covered by Medicare and most third
party insurance carriers, with a physician’s prescription.
