"I am really thankful..." Thomas's Story

Thomas Byrd was suffering from a staph infection on his ankle. After cutting a golf ball sized area from the ankle to remove the infection, his surgeon referred him to the Wound Care/Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center for advanced wound care treatment.

At the center, nurse practitioner Marguerita applied a wound V.A.C. to the surgical site. A wound V.A.C. is a device consisting of a dressing fitted with a tube attached to a special vacuum to remove fluids and promote healing. The V.A.C. remained on Mr. Byrd's ankle night and day for two months, drawing fluids to the surface of the wound.

Mr. Byrd says, “Prior to the treatment, my surgeon thought I may have to have a skin graft. The wound V.A.C. did such a good job that a skin graft was not required.” He adds, “Marguerita interacts well with her patients. She is very good at her work and was genuinely excited by my progress. I am really thankful to her and everyone who cared for me.”

"I have come a long way..." Richards's Story

Last July Richard Daniel was diagnosed with a blood infection and underwent 12 weeks of antibiotic therapy but still struggled with his health.

After having back surgery at Bon Secours DePaul, Mr. Daniel began treatments at the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Center to help the surgical wound heal.

Mr. Daniel was released from the hospital the week before Thanksgiving and then transferred to a rehabilitation center for 10 days where he continued the treatments. Now he is home and goes to HBO several times a week. He says, "The care I receive at HBO has been excellent. Dr. Brewer, Bill and Melissa treat me very well. I was a little anxious when I first began the treatments but they have made it painless. I even look forward to the treatments because I know they are helping me heal. I have come a long way."

"I got well..." Ruth's Story

A month after Ruth Schoembaum injured her leg, the wound still had not healed. Her doctor referred her to the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center for wound care treatment.

Mrs. Schoembaum says, "On my first visit they tested the oxygen levels in my leg and began treatment. After just one more visit, my wound healed. All I can say is that everyone was very kind and polite. They were very professional and did a good job. I got well."
