Clinical Pastoral Education at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action-reflection model of education that utilizes direct, hands-on ministry engagement with patients, families, and staff under supervision for the formation and development of pastoral identity, authority, and competency. Peer group interaction and feedback are integral to this process-focused emphasis. CPE brings ministers, seminary students, and qualified laypersons together to engage in intense relationships of spiritual care with a commitment to look within, increasing self awareness and improving competency in the art of relational ministry. All classes and groups are held at the Maryview campus in Portsmouth, VA.
Our Program
At the Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center CPE Center, CPE students can expect to be placed in one of three ministry sites: Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth (346-beds); Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk (125-beds); and Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News (110-beds).
CPE Resident Chaplains (full-time, year-round program) are placed at Bon Secours Maryview. Full-time Summer Chaplain Interns and part-time Chaplain Externs may be placed at any of the three facilities. The stipend for full-time CPE Residents is $26,000, plus healthcare benefits. No tuition is charged to full-time residents. Students in the full-time Summer Internship and the part-time Extended programs pay $400 tuition per unit.
Clinical areas vary by hospital but include emergency departments, oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, intensive care, surgery, physical rehabilitation, maternity/newborn nursery, palliative care, and behavioral medicine. Students are mentored by a Manager or Director of Spiritual Care in each hospital setting, and a team of Board Certified Chaplains. The CPE Center at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center is facilitated by The Rev. Stephen K. Goss, an ACPE Supervisor with over twenty years of program experience.
Our program is accredited by The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc., 1549 Clairmont Road, Suite 103, Decatur, GA 30033, (404) 320 – 1472. www.acpe.edu.
