The In Motion staff is adept at addressing women's special needs and routintely conducts a wide range of therapies especially for women, including those dealing with:

  • Incontinence (Urinary and Fecal)
Using therapeutic exercise, biofeedback technology and lifestyle education, the incontinence program helps patients retrain pelvic floor muscles and reverse inappropriate voiding habits.
  • Pelvic Floor Disorders
Physical therapy can help patients regain control, typically, in a once per week program lasting eight weeks. When prescribed by your doctor, your physical therapy should be covered by Medicare and most third party insurance carriers.
  • Pelvic Pain
Individualized treatment plans are developed to address vulvodynia, dyspareunia, coccydynia/coccyx fracture, painful episiotomy, interstitial cystitis or any other pelvic pain.
  • Breast Cancer Rehab
All patients how have undergone a mastectomy, lumpectomy, axillary dissection or breast reconstruction are candidates for physical therapy. Common issues related to berast cancer surgery that can be helped with physical therapy are lymphedema, decreased shoulder ROM, myofascial restrictions and problems associated with scar tissue.
  • Pre/Post Partum
More than 50% of pregnant women experience back pain or some other orthopaedic problem. This can be due to the increased elasticity of the soft tissues of the body and postural changes as the baby grows. Althought pain is common, it is not normal. Physical therapy designed specifically for pregnant women is often recommended to treat problems that arise during pregnancy.
  • Osteoporosis
Patients are taught how to manage pain and increase their ability to perform the activities of daily living through strength and endurance training, improving posture and identifying risk factors.
  • Arthritis
Arthiritis is the leading cause of disability in the US and affects three-quarters of people over the age of 60. Studies show that decreased strength is an important predicator of functional decline. Our goals are to improve mobility, strength, and endurance; increase functional skills; reduce pain, stiffness and discomfort; improve knowledge and understanding of the disease process, and enhance the overall quality of life.

Therapists at Bon Secours Virginia are board-certified. Many have advanced training focused on women's health issues, including incontinence, lymphadema and pre- and post-partum pregnancy conditions.
