John R Baker, MD, PhD Neurology and Neuroendovascular Surgery
John R. Baker, MD, PhD is the Medical Director of the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Neurovascular Center and the Neuroscience ICU. He also leads our NeuroInterventional team. Dr. Baker specializes in neuroendovascular surgery and vascular and critical neurology. His focus is on the treatment of cerebrovascular disease including acute stroke, angioplasty and stenting for carotid and vertebrobasilar revascularization. He also performs procedures like brain aneurysm coiling tumor embolization and sclerotherapy, as well as spine kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty.
Dr. Baker received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed a residency in neurology as well as fellowships in radiology, endovascular surgical neuroradiology, and vascular and critical care neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Before joining Bon Secours, Dr. Baker served as Director of the Neurovascular Center at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Mercy.
Dr. Baker's research interests include the investigation of interventional neuroradiology and endovascular neurosurgery techniques. His study of human brain activity using functional neuroimaging to help provide more effective care during the management of and recovery from neurovascular disease.
D. Jonathan Bernardini, MD Anesthesiology and Pain Management
Donald Jonathan Bernardini, MD, received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. He holds a medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, in Camden, N.J. He completed an internship in general surgery at the David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center and University of California, Davis School of Medicine, at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. Dr. Bernardini completed a residency in anesthesiology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, Mass. He completed a fellowship in pain management from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center International Pain Institute in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Bernardini is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.Prior to joining Bon Secours, Dr. Bernardini was in a large multidisciplinary pain management practice in Austin, Texas. He then served as a pain management physician at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center Pain Management Clinic at Fort Hood, Texas.
Robert B Hansen, MD Neurology and Pain Medicine
Prior to his association with Bon Secours Center for Pain Management, Dr. Hansen was in private practice at The Center for Pain Management in Portsmouth, Va. Earlier in his career, he was associate clinical professor of neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical School of Virginia in Richmond, Va. He has also held clinical appointments at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, serving as medical director for the In-Patient Headache Unit and the In-Patient Pain Management Unit.
Dr. Hansen has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He earned his medical degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and completed an internship in internal medicine at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. In addition, Dr. Hansen completed a residency in neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he also earned a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology. Additionally, he holds a fellowship in neurointensive care medicine from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md.
Dr. Hansen is board-certified in neurology, clinical neurophysiology and pain medicine. He is a member of the American Headache Society, the International Headache Society, the American Academy of Neurology, the Virginia Neurologic Society and the American Pain Society.
Donald Holzer, MD Neurology and Pain Management
Prior to his association with Bon Secours Center for Pain Management, Dr. Holzer was in private practice at The Center for Pain Management in Portsmouth, Va. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the SUNY Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY. He holds a medical degree from Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania in Hershey, Pa. Dr. Holzer completed an internship in internal medicine at Cornell Cooperating Hospitals in New York, where he also served residencies in internal medicine and neurology.
Dr. Holzer is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American College of Physicians, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Study of Headache and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pain Management and a member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Academy Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the American Back Society, the American Pain Society and the American Medical Association. In addition, he sits on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Pain Management.
Smaranda Andreia Galis, MD Neurology
Dr. Smaranda Galis received her MD degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj, Romania where she also completed a residency in Neurology and then practiced neurology in a large academic center. After moving to the United States she continued her education through the Oklahoma University Neurology program. She functioned as an Assistant Professor of Neurology for three years in the same department, enjoyed teaching and was honored with the "best clinic attending" award from the neurology residents. She also served as acting director of the Spinal Cord Injury/Multiple Sclerosis Oklahoma City VAMC program and was part of the first group of candidates to become Certified Multiple Sclerosis specialist by the Consortium of MS Center in 2004.
Before coming to Bon Secours, Dr. Galis was active Neurology staff member of the McAlester Regional Health Center; while there she was active in developing stroke protocols, and was a member of the Oklahoma State Stroke Systems Advisory Committee; she enjoyed the appreciation of the medical community and hospital staff who honored her with the "best doctor award" in 2009.
She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the Southern Clinical Neurological Society.
Robert J Mendez, DO Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
Before coming to the Bon Secours Center for Pain Management, Dr. Mendez was in private practice at The Center for Pain Management in Portsmouth, Va. Previously, he served as assistant head of the anesthesiology department at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va.
Dr. Mendez has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Florida International University in Miami, Fla. and holds a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine in North Miami Beach, Fla. He completed an internship in psychiatry at Portsmouth Naval Hospital, where he also completed a residency in anesthesiology. Dr. Mendez completed Subspecialty Tract studies in obstetrical anesthesia at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Currently Wake Forest University School of Medicine) in Winston-Salem, NC, as well as the Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Additionally, he holds a fellowship in pain management from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital and a fellowship in pediatric pain management from Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, Mass.
Dr. Mendez is board-certified in pain medicine and anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is also certified by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.
Dr. Gebel received his medical degree from State University of New York. He completed his neurological residency at State University, King’s County Hospital Center, Brooklyn, New York. In addition, he earned his multiple sclerosis mini fellowship at the University of Texas.
Dr. Gebel is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Medical Association. Prior to joining Bon Secours, he co-developed and was director of Florida Hospital's Stroke Management & Rehabilitation Team (SMART Unit), and served as medical staff chief of the Orlando Division.
Gerry N Smith, MD Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Prior to his association with Bon Secours Center for Pain Management,
Dr. Smith worked at Riverside Rehabilitation Institute in Newport News, Va. Earlier in his career, he was on the consulting staff of Riverside Regional Medical Center, Hampton Roads Specialty Hospital and Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital all located in Newport News, VA.
Dr. Smith has a Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cinicinnati in Ohio and completed a residency in
internal medicine at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. In
addition, Dr. Smith completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Smith is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Virginia Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Kimberly Davis is a physician’s assistant. Ms. Davis holds a master’s of health science degree (MHS) from Duke University in Durham, N.C. She completed a physician assistant fellowship in emergency medicine in Norfolk, Va.
Her interests include reading, poetry, art, exercise and nutrition.
Katie Gerarge, PA-C Pain Management
Katie Gerarge, MPA, PA-C, is a certified physician’s assistant. Ms. Gerarge holds a bachelor of science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., and earned her master of physician assistant degree (MPA) from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va.
Ms. Gerarge is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She is a member of the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She has a special interest in adolescent medicine and evaluating and treating conditions common to this unique age group.
Melissa A. McCrary, MPA, PA-C., a certified physician’s assistant, earned a Master of Physician Assistant degree (MPA) from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.
Ms. McCrary is a member of the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Prior to joining Bon Secours, she was employed by Peninsula Emergency Physicians in Newport News, Va.
Bobbi Jo Oldaker, RN, MS, NP-C
Bobbi Jo Oldaker, R.N., a nurse practitioner, earned her master’s degree in nursing and completed a family health nurse practitioner program from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., where she also earned her bachelor’s degree. She received her diploma in practical nursing from Riverside School of Practical Nursing in Newport News, Va. In addition, Ms. Oldaker has an Associate of Science in Nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., and a Forensic Nursing Certificate from Kaplan College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Ms. Oldaker is a member of the Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners. She brings 13 years of health care experience to her role as nurse practitioner.
Stephanie Scott, RN, MSN, FNP-C
Stephanie Scott is a nationally certified family nurse practitioner with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She has been a dedicated family nurse practitioner for almost ten years. Ms. Scott has a strong background in internal medicine and specialty experience in critical call, pulmonary, nephrology, and ICU telemedicine.
She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
Roberta Stewart, RN, MSN, FNP Pain Management
Bobbie Stewart is a native of Buffalo,N.Y., where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She graduated from Naval Nurse Corps Indoctrination in Newport, R.I., and was assigned to duty at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. During her Naval career, Bobbie became Charge Nurse of the Neurosurgery Wards and was the Nurse Leader for the Vietnam Prisoner of War homecoming in 1973. She earned her Masters Degree in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Old Dominion University in 1985. She has been a neurosurgical nurse practitioner at various private practices in Norfolk, Va. In addition, her national leadership was recognized when she was elected President of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN) in 1996. Bobbie continues to serve the neurosciences as adjunct assistant professor at the Old Dominion University School of Physical Therapy, as President of the Southeastern Virginia Chapter of AANN, and in many other volunteer endeavors.
Bobbie has practiced at the Center For Pain Management since 2006.
Prior to joining Bon Secours, Barratt C. Sturtevant, PA-C, was employed by The Center for Pain Management in Portsmouth, Va. A certified physician’s assistant, Mr. Sturtevant is a graduate of the U.S. Navy Physician Assistant Training Program, which is accredited through George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Sturtevant is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
