Our multidisciplinary team of physicians and clinicians is committed to providing exceptional, Personalized care for every patient. Emphasis is placed on the most innovative colorectal cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care. Our physicians have made the commitment to offer all patients a team review of their case in which board-certified colon and rectal surgeons, a medical oncologist, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, a pathologist, a radiologist, and a nurse coordinator collectively recommend the optimal treatment plan.
Our Physicians:
Ray T Ramirez, MD, FACS, FASCRS Colorectal Surgery
Dr. Ramirez, medical director of the Bon Secours Colorectal Center, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). Dr. Ramirez specializes in surgery of the small intestine, colon and rectum.
Dr. Ramirez completed a General Surgery Residency at EVMS and a Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana. His practice, Tidewater Surgical Specialists, is located in Suffolk, Virginia.
Dr. Ramirez has expertise in the treatment of colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis) fecal incontinence, and prevention of colorectal cancer, hemorrhoids, fissures and fistula/abscess disease. He is recognized for his expertise in using innovative, minimally invasive surgical techniques, which he teaches to physicians around the world.
Skylar Alsop, MD Pathology-Anatomical-Clinical
Dr. Alsop earned his M.D. from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City and completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. Dr. Alsop recently completed a fellowship in gynecologic and breast pathology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he worked with Dr. Mark H. Stoler, a world-renowned expert in gynecologic pathology. He received his bachelor's degree in biology form Utah State University in Logan, Utah.
Daniel M Atienza, MD Medical Oncology
Dr. Atienza earned his MD at the University of the East. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital and a fellowship in hematology/pathology at Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Atienza practices with Virginia Oncology Associates in Suffolk, Virginia.
Dr. Judith Blevins is the radiation oncologist at the Martha Davis Cancer Treatment Center at Maryview Medical Center. Entering med school in her mid 30s (“dreams vs insanity”) with a husband and 3 school aged children, she graduated from Eastern Virginia Medical School, then completed residency in Radiation Oncology there as well. Following that, she continued on at EVMS as an Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology for 3 years. After a short stint practicing in Elizabeth City, Dr. Blevins returned to the area and joined Oncology Associates of VA in 1999; she has been practicing here since.
Thomas J Duntemann, MD Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine
Dr. Duntemann is a board certified gastroenterologist and internal medicine physician. He earned his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences, The Chicago Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Fellowship trained in Gastroenterology at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, he also completed his general medicine internship there while serving as an active duty Naval Officer. Additionally, Dr. Duntemann completed Flight Surgeon Training at the Flight Surgeon School at Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida and his residency at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. Dr. Duntemann is also a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.
A member of Gastrointestinal & Liver Specialists team since 2000, Dr. Duntemann’s special treatment interests include biliary tract disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
J. Mark Lawson, MD Gastroenterology
Dr. Lawson is a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. He completed his internship, residency and a fellowship at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr. Lawson practices with the GI and Liver Specialists of Tidewater in Suffolk, Virginia.
Dr. McKenzie is a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School. She served her internship at Anderson Memorial Hospital in South Carolina and her residency in radiology at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. McKenzie practices with Medical Center Radiologists in Norfolk, Virginia.
Emily Rivet, MD Colorectal Surgery
Dr. Emily Rivet earned her medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her surgical training, including a general surgery residency and a colon and rectal surgery fellowship, in St. Louis at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. In addition to her medical training, Dr. Rivet received an MBA from Washington University with a focus on professional ethics and health care systems.
Dr. Rivet performs laparoscopic and minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of colon and rectal diseases including cancers, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticular disease. Her areas of clinical focus include pelvic floor dysfunctions such as constipation, fecal incontinence and obstetrical injuries, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, anal fistulas, perianal abscesses and anal fissures.
Dr. Rivet has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, as evidenced by numerous awards for scholarship and surgical expertise. She has also sustained interests in the promotion of patient safety in the hospital context and has published on the topics of peri-operative patient care and the critical care of surgical patients.
Lloyd A Shabazz, MD, FACP Hematology & Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine
Dr. Shabazz earned his MD at the University of California, Davis. He completed a Categorical Residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His Fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology was completed at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and the University of California San Diego in La Jolla, CA. He is a former Morton-Levitt Research Scholar and currently is an active Clinical Researcher in solid tumors and Hematologic Malagnancies. Dr. Shabazz practices with Delta Hematology/Oncology Associates in Portsmouth, Virginia.
