about Hampton Roads
Steeped in history since its formation, the Hampton Roads area of Virginia is most notably known as “America’s First Region.” After settlers first landed on the shores of Virginia Beach, and before finally settling in Jamestown, they passed through many areas and along the way created a series of towns, counties, and cities now known as Hampton Roads.
Hampton Roads is bountiful in events throughout the year and offers activities for all ages. There are venues to enjoy everything from concerts on the lawn, wine festivals oceanside, or running in marathons for various causes. If you enjoy learning more about the history of Hampton Roads, you can travel to Colonial Williamsburg to experience a day in the life of colonial times or tour over 40 historical sites throughout the area.
In addition to the rich history, the region offers relaxing beaches, scenic trails, lively sporting events, family-friendly museums, and a vibrant nightlife. As a result of the many opportunities and activities extended to citizens and tourists, Hampton Roads has won awards and accolades, and most recently was named the 2nd best city in America for raising a family by the Wall Street Journal.
