Bon Secours DePaul Hospital's New Mermaid - La Sirène de Mission
In 1855, at the height of the yellow fever epidemic in Norfolk,
eight sisters of the Daughters of Charity, who had come to
Norfolk in 1839 to operate the St. Mary's Orphans Asylum,
offered to nurse the ill and dying. A wealthy patron of the
orphanage, Ann Plume Behan Herron, opened and donated her
home to the Daughters of Charity for use as a hospital. Norfolk's
first public hospital, The Hospital of St. Vincent DePaul,
was incorporated by the Virginia legislature in 1856.
By 1939, the need for a larger more modern facility resulted
in the purchase of land at the corner of Granby Street and
Kingsley Lane. The new facility, named DePaul Hospital, admitted
its first patients in May 1944. On November 1, 1996, the sponsorship
of DePaul Hospital was transferred from the Daughters of Charity
to the Bon Secours Health System and it was renamed Bon Secours
DePaul Medical Center.

In the year 1855 the tears of a child call mermaids from across the
sea to battle the fever sailors nicknamed “Yellow Jack.”
Lisa Suhay, author of “There Goes a Mermaid! A NorFolktale”
teams up with New York Illustrator Joan O‘Brien to create a richly
illustrated and historic tale. The author weaves together mermaid
magic and history to tell the tale of the Yellow Fever epidemic of
1855. Children also learn a fanciful explanation of why the City of
Norfolk, Virginia has both yellow flowers and mermaids all around
the city.
