As a benefit of Bon Secours Heart Institute’s partnership with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, members of the Columbia University medical staff will be in Hampton Roads to participate in the 3rd Annual Medical Symposium "Best Practices in the Cardiovascular Patient," providing hands-on useable information for the clinical practice of Cardiologists and Primary Care physicians.

Improvements and advancements in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and mitral valve disease, in combination with prevention and medical therapy, have realized measurable success in the improvement of quality of life, and longevity in patients with these cardiac diseases.  This symposium is a half-day educational event that will focus primarily on innovative and practical approaches for the cardiologist and primary care physician treating patients in the office, and in the pre- and post- surgical settings.  The program is designed to encourage interaction with the faculty through case presentations, discussions and question and answer sessions.  Registrants are invited to present cases for the meeting.

Course Director: Joseph Tenenbaum, MD
Chief of the Allen Pavilion Medical Service
Columbia University Medical Center

Joseph Tenenbaum, MD, a clinical educator and cardiologist on the faculty of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons since 1979, is currently the Edgar Leifer Professor of Clinical Medicine and Chief of the Allen Pavilion Medical Service. A native of New Jersey, he obtained a BA in Physical Chemistry from Brandeis University in 1968 and an MD from Harvard Medical School in 1974. He trained in the internal medicine program at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York and the cardiovascular training program of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Tenenbaum’s clinical career has focused on both internal medicine and adult cardiology, with an emphasis on critical care cardiology, valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease. He has received several awards for his education of  postgraduate physicians. Since 1990, he has participated in the administration of the Department of Medicine as a vice chair and then as Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs. He led the Department of Medicine from October, 2001 through April, 2003 as Interim Chair. Dr. Tenenbaum helped establish the Columbia Faculty Practice Organization and served as its first Chairman for four years. Following a 27-month leadership role as the first Dean for Clinical Affairs at the medical school, Dr. Tenenbaum became the Chief of the Allen Pavilion Medical Service at NewYork-Presbyterian. He participates in national and international CME.

The American College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) and The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accept AMA/PRA category 1 credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts AMA/PRA category 1 credit toward recertification requirements
