Meet Our Team - Christian Lee Gilbert, MD, FACS

Christian Lee Gilbert, MD, is a board-certified pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon with the Bon Secours Heart Institute’s affiliated pediatric cardiac surgery
program at The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters (CHKD). Prior to joining Bon Secours and CHKD, Dr. Gilbert served at Le Bonheur Children’s
Medical Center at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis since 2003. Most recently, he was the associate medical director for cardiovascular critical care and an associate professor of pediatrics and surgery. He also served as chief of pediatric cardiovascular surgery and medical director of pediatric cardiovascular surgery at Le Bonheur. From 1991 to 2003, he served at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, where
he assumed the position of chief pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery in 1992. Dr. Gilbert was also an attending physician at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado, and was a general medical officer for the U.S. Public Health Service.

In addition to his work at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Gilbert’s other academic appointments have included serving as a clinical instructor of cardiothoracic surgery at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and a clinical instructor of surgery at Temple University School
of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gilbert received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and his medical degree from Temple University.
He completed an internship in family medicine at St. Mary Corwin Hospital, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He did general surgery residencies at Yale University and Temple University, and a cardiothoracic surgery residency, also at Yale. He completed a pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1991.

He has co-authored and published numerous articles and has presented papers to many medical societies. His holds membership in the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, the Pennsylvania Association of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the W.P. Ritchie, Jr., MD, Ph.D. Surgical Society, the Mid-South Pediatric Specialist Board
