The council's purpose is to ensure that the Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center Cardiovascular and Thoracic Program will provide world-class clinical and service quality by being mission-centered, people- and market-focused, and performance-driven.

CMS/Premier Study
Bon Secours is the largest hospital system to participate in a voluntary quality initiative of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) and Premier to improve care in four diagnoses: acute myocardial infarction (AMI), congestive heart failure (CHF), acquired pneumonia and joint replacement. After just one year, Bon Secours Maryview achieved ranking in the top 10th percentile for treatment of AMI and CHF.

Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group is national coalition of employers that surveys hospitals' compliance with "safe practices" standards. Bon Secours Hampton Roads hospitals are in full or substantial compliance in implementing the Leapfrog Group's 27 Quality Practices Index.

JCAHO
We voluntarily seek accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) for all of our acute care facilities. Each Bon Secours Hampton Roads hospital participates in JCAHO's National Patient Safety Goals and National Quality Improvement Goals, and all are fully accredited.

100K Lives
Bon Secours Hampton Roads has joined the 100K Lives Campaign, the first-ever national campaign whose goal is to save 100,000 lives by implementing proven health care improvement techniques. Bon Secours initially will focus on preventing adverse drug events (ADEs) by implementing the medication reconciliation process. 100K Lives is sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a not-for-profit organization driving the improvement of health by advancing the quality and value of health care.

Bon Secours will also participate in the campaign's other quality improvement initiatives, which are:

  • Deploy rapid response teams for cardiac patients
  • Deliver reliable, evidence-based care for acute myocardial infarction
  • Prevent central line and surgical site infections
  • Prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia

American College of Cardiology National Cardiovascular Data Registry
Bon Secours participates in the ACC-NCDR, the gold standard for measuring quality in the cath lab. As a national multi-center and voluntary data registry it focuses on quality of cardiac catheterizations and angioplasties. It is based on a standard data set, is outcomes-oriented, quality-driven and patient-based. The ACC-NCDR is designed to help assure quality of patient care via comparisons and benchmarks for practice patterns, demographics, outcomes and trends. It serves as a monitoring tool for the institution and supports the preparation of reports to regulatory and credentialing bodies.

Society of Thoracic Surgeons Database
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons offers outcome programs in the areas of Adult Cardiac, General Thoracic and Congenital Surgery. By committing to collecting outcomes data to the STS National Database, surgeons at Bon Secours and around the nation are committed to improving the quality of care that their cardiothoracic surgery patients receive. Since 1994, over 40 publications have come from the STS National Databases. These studies have been published in a variety of professional journals and textbooks. The STS National Database has recently served as the basis for a federally funded national quality improvement randomized trial, as well as research in targeted areas of cardiac surgery.
