MISSION STATEMENT:
The Bon Secours DePaul Foundation maintains the mission
statement of the Bon Secours Health System.
Bon Secours DePaul Health Foundation is dedicated to the
philanthropic support of the programs, people and mission
of Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. Our joint mission
is to provide health care services to those in need, especially
to the poor and dying, for the purpose of alleviating human
suffering and affirming human meaning in the midst of pain
and loss.
Recognizing the dignity of all persons, we provide compassionate
health care services contributing to the physical, social,
emotional and spiritual well being of the community we serve.
We commit ourselves to help bring people to wholeness by:
- Understanding and responding to health care needs (especially
unmet needs)
- Developing the potential of those who serve with us
- Advocating a just and equitable public health policy
- Modeling justice in the workplace"
HISTORY:
Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center has been a part of the
Norfolk Community for more than 140 years, founded by a
charitable contribution of a private home that later became
the first hospital in the City of Norfolk. Ann Plume Behan
Herron opened her home to the needy victims of the yellow
fever epidemic and donated the mansion to the Sisters of
Charity after her death from yellow fever in 1856. In 1944,
that home burned down and the Medical Center was relocated
to its current location.
The DePaul Health Foundation was established in 1986 under
the Daughters of Charity of DePaul Medical Center to manage
the charitable donations made to the Medical Center.
The DePaul Medical Center was transferred from the Daughters
of Charity to the Sisters of Bon Secours in 1996. Bon Secours
DePaul Health Foundation was established to raise and manage
donated funds to support the Medical Center.
The Foundation provides stewardship for all gifts, grants
and endowment funds, and manages special events for the
hospital, including the Annual Golf Tournament; A holiday
event; and the Medical Center Gala. As a not-for-profit
organization, the DePaul Health Foundation reinvests its
net income in new equipment and programs for better healthcare.
Gifts to the DePaul Health Foundation go directly to strengthen
programs, add new services, acquire new medical equipment,
or build new healthcare facilities. The goal of all projects
and programs is to improve the health and lives of members
of our community.
Every gift to the DePaul Health Foundation is an important
building block for a stronger hospital. There are many ways
to give: gifts of cash, stock and securities, gift annuities,
real estate, memorial and honoring gifts, life insurance,
trusts and bequest provisions.
Through the generosity of people like you, DePaul Health
Foundation is able to meet our community's healthcare needs.
Your support of the DePaul Health Foundation makes a difference
- every day - in the lives of thousands of people throughout
our community. For more information, call (757) 889-5900 or
email DePaul
Health Foundation.
FUNDING:
Each year, more than 2,000 of our friends and neighbors
share the gift of good health by making contributions to
the Bon Secours DePaul Health Foundation. Some support a
particular program such as our Clinic or the Cancer Center
at DePaul, while others make unrestricted gifts that are
used for the most urgently needed equipment, programs and
services.
As a non profit, 501 (c) 3 organization, all gifts to the
DePaul Health Foundation have a direct impact on the communities
we serve, improving the health and well being of the thousands
of patients and families we touch each year. As a donor
to the DePaul Health Foundation, you have the knowledge
that your gift makes a difference
In 1997, The Board of Directors established the Sister
Agatha Cadogan Memorial Endowment; this campaign was launched
to raise one million dollars for care of the poor at DePaul
Medical Center. This fund specifically assists the indigent
patient seen at the Medical Center.
